Disney’s CEO Bob Iger has announced that the company would be starting layoffs this week. It was reported that this week’s layoff would include three headcount reductions. This comes after only one month of warning as the company made the original layoff announced last month. The layoffs this month are expected to precede a larger round of layoffs next month followed by a final round in the summer.

The layoff this week will include 7,000 Disney employees in what Iger has called a “strategic realignment.” And upon the announcement’s release, Monday Disney shares rose 0.8% while the company’s stock price had declined 31.7% over the past year.

Iger had told employees, according to Daily Wire,
“For our employees who aren’t impacted, I want to acknowledge that there will no doubt be challenges ahead as we continue building the structures and functions that will enable us to be successful moving forward…In tough moments, we must always do what is required to ensure Disney can continue delivering exceptional entertainment to audiences and guests around the world, now, and long into the future.”
Iger also said that the layoffs would allow the company to enable “important cost-saving measures” that they have deemed necessary for a “more effective, coordinated and streamlined approach.” Iger also highlighted that the layoffs were necessary for creativity and financials.

Disney isn’t the first company to begin layoffs or lockdowns as the threat of recession approaches. Companies like Meta and Amazon have also noted multiple layoffs of unnecessary employees due to the economic landscape.
