Multiple sources have reported that Congressman Colin Allred, a Dallas Democrat, is contemplating a bid for the U.S. Senate in the upcoming election, challenging incumbent Ted Cruz for his third term. Allred’s team has been meeting privately with Democratic strategists for several weeks, to evaluate the feasibility and cost of running a statewide campaign. Dallas County Democrats have expressed their support for Allred’s potential candidacy, believing that he would make a formidable opponent to Cruz and bring more “Texas values” to the Senate. However, Allred is not as well known outside of North Texas, despite being seen as a rising star in Democratic politics.

Allred currently represents Dallas County’s 32nd District, which includes the Park Cities, Lakewood, the M Streets, parts of Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, and Southern Dallas. He flipped the seat in 2018, defeating incumbent Republican Pete Sessions with 52% of the vote and won re-election twice, despite the district being a swing district with conservative voters. Redistricting last year gave Democrats a comfortable lead in the 32nd District now.

However, if Allred chooses to run for the U.S. Senate, he would have to relinquish his current seat. In addition, challenging Ted Cruz is no easy feat for any Democrat. Although Congressman Beto O’Rourke attempted to defeat Cruz in 2018, Cruz ultimately won with 50.9% of the vote. O’Rourke’s record-breaking fundraising of over $80 million dollars for his campaign suggests that a significant amount of money is required for the next Democrat to challenge Cruz in a statewide campaign. In November, Cruz announced his plan to seek a third term in 2024 and reintroduced a bill to impose term limits, which has little support in Washington.
