The Texas Department of Public Safety has stopped another smuggling operation. This time including a U-Haul moving van. Tuesday as a Texas DPS trooper stopped a U-Haul van in a routine traffic violation stop in Kinney County, Texas, an area that sits on the Texas-Mexico border west of San Antonio, the trooper looked through the rearview mirror and “saw several individuals hiding under blankets.” Just since Operation Lone Star was launched, in March of 2021 by Texas Governor Gregg Abbott, the program has made 308,700 migrant apprehensions and more than 20,200 criminal arrests. The Lone Star Operation was launched as a joint operation between the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas National Guard as a border security initiative.
The driver, Belinda Spurgeon, was arrested and charged with three counts of human smuggling. The investigation uncovered three undocumented immigrants inside the van that Spurgeon claimed she did not know. She also told police that three guys had told her they needed a ride because their car had broken down. After some time though, Spurgeon admitted that she smuggled the immigrants from Canton, Texas to Austin for $16,000.
