Wednesday as President Biden and his wife Jill Biden headed to Florida to speak with Governor Ron DeSantis, her shoe choice did not become a major headline unlike a very publicized First Lady Melania Trump’s shoe choice did back in 2017. When Melania accompanied President Trump to Texas after Hurricane Harvey, Melania wore heals onto the plane which were highly criticized. She did change while in Texas, which was reported, however the criticism had already become the major headline. The New York Times described her look with the headline “Melania Trump, Off to Texas, Finds Herself on Thin Heels.” Vogue wrote, “Melania Trump’s Hurricane Stilettos, and the White House’s Continual Failure to Understand Optics.” The Washington Post also attacked the former First Lady’s wardrobe claiming she “offered up a fashion moment instead of an expression of empathy.”
These outlets along, with many others, did not criticize or even reference Jill Biden’s heels in reporting the president’s arrival.
While many photos were taken of First Lady Biden’s outfit no stories reported the heels, showing a very noticeable difference from the treatment First Lady Melania Trump was extended by the media.
Although First Lady Trump did change to tennis shoes during the trip, Jill Biden did not change and remained in heels throughout the duration of the trip. Though this is not the first time Melania Trump received criticism for her outfit choices, it will likely not be the last. Fashion, especially for women, has always been a good target point and it will not end here.
